Overview
The Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. According to legend, the Pandavas from the Mahabharata sought Lord Shiva’s blessings here to atone for their sins after the Kurukshetra war. The temple is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas and later reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters, the temple stands against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-capped Kedarnath range. Built using massive stone slabs, the temple has withstood the test of time and natural calamities, including the devastating 2013 floods. Inside the temple, the presiding deity is a conical-shaped Shiva Lingam, symbolizing Lord Shiva’s cosmic presence. Pilgrims undertake an arduous trek of 16 km from Gaurikund to seek blessings at the temple, with facilities like ponies, palkis, and helicopters available for assistance. The spiritual aura, mesmerizing landscapes, and deep-rooted history make Kedarnath a must-visit for devotees and adventure seekers alike.
