Badrinath

Badrinath, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India, is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is a part of the Char Dham Yatra. Situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, the temple is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and the Alaknanda River. The temple remains open from May to November, as heavy snowfall makes the region inaccessible during winter.

Overview

The Badrinath Temple has immense mythological significance. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu performed penance here, and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to provide him shelter. The temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and later expanded by Garhwal kings. The main deity is a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu, known as Badri Vishal, seated in a meditative posture. Pilgrims take a holy dip in the Tapt Kund, a natural hot water spring believed to have medicinal properties, before entering the temple.

Badrinath is well-connected by road and can be reached via Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Dehradun. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (317 km away), and the nearest railway station is in Rishikesh (295 km away). From there, buses and taxis are available to Badrinath. Accommodation options include GMVN guest houses, private hotels, dharamshalas, and budget lodges.
